A customs data released by the South Korean Customs Agency on the 24th shows that the import volume of whiskey in the first quarter of this year increased by 78.2% year-on-year, to 8443 tons. Customs data shows that it reached the highest level in the same period since the start of relevant statistics in 2000 and is also the second highest record in a single season.
The import scale of whiskey has recently surged, with customs data showing 4738 tons in the first quarter of last year, 6451 tons in the second quarter, 7224 tons in the third quarter, and 8625 tons in the fourth quarter. Customs data shows that in the first quarter of this year, it exceeded 8000 tons.
Customs data shows that previously, due to the implementation of a five day working week and a 52 hour working week, as well as the implementation of the "Prohibition of Unfair Petitions and Receipt of Property Law", and the unpopularity of spirits such as bomb liquor, whiskey imports have shrunk. However, during the epidemic period, with the popularity of the culture of drinking at home and alone, and the cocktail "Highball" mixed with whisky, carbonated water and tonic water, it was welcomed by MZ generation (people born in the 1980s to the early 2000s), which promoted the increase of whisky imports.
