The main importers of Cambodian agricultural products are China, the European Union, ASEAN countries, India, Japan and South Korea.
Rice exports fell by nearly 30%, mainly due to the shortage of containers, rising transportation costs and falling global prices. Exports to Vietnam and Arabia increased by more than 72%, reaching nearly 1.7 million tons. In the first half of this year, Cambodia exported rice to 47 countries, including 20 EU countries.
Sin Chanthy, president of the Cambodia Logistics Association, said that transportation costs will start to rise in 2021. The price of a container has risen from US$4,000 last year to US$10,000, and the number of containers that can be used to transport rice has also declined.
According to data from the Asian Development Bank, Cambodia’s agricultural sector is expected to grow by 1.3% this year and 1.2% in 2022, thanks to the increase in exports to China and the increase in fish, frog and shrimp farming.
