It was reported on June 14 that at present, China has approved the import of Vietnamese passion fruit, and the negotiation process of exporting durian to China is in the final stage. In the US market, the negotiation process for sales to the US has also entered the final stage. This is a positive signal and a good export opportunity for Vietnamese fruits.
At the forum titled “Measures to Strengthen the Sustainable Development and Marketing of Key Fruits in the South”, Le Thanh Son, Deputy Director of the Plantation Bureau of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam, revealed that China has allowed pilot projects to Guangdong Province through the ports of Lang Son and Quang Ninh in Vietnam. Importing Vietnamese passion fruit, the durian export negotiation between the two sides has entered the final round. Both parties are finalizing export control protocols on growing areas, distributor numbers and pest management.
Vietnam exports six kinds of fruits, including dragon fruit, mango, lychee, longan, rambutan and star apple, to the US market. At present, the two sides are negotiating the final step to open the door of grapefruit export.
In addition, Vietnamese dragon fruit, mango and lychee have been exported to Japan, and they are currently negotiating with the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries on the cold chain preservation of longan, laying the foundation for the export of other fruits to Japan.
In order to usher in export opportunities, some places have made preparations for planting areas and sources of raw materials. Duan Yuyou, deputy director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Gia Lai Province, said that the province has just added passion fruit to the list of four major fruits, with a planting area of 4,000 hectares, ranking first in the country. By 2025, Gia Lai Province will strive to increase the planting area of passion fruit to 20,000 hectares and become the hometown of passion fruit in the country.
According to data from Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in the first five months of this year, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports were about US$1.47 billion, down 13.6 percent year-on-year. In May 2022 alone, the foreign exchange earned US$300 million, a year-on-year decrease of 11%.
