According to the Brazilian Foreign Trade Secretariat, Brazilian leather exports in May fell by 8.5% compared with the same period in 2021, with an export value of 109.2 million US dollars. In terms of export volume, compared to the same period last year, exports fell by 26.2% to 11.2 million square meters.
So far, the total cumulative export value of leather in the first five months of 2022 is US$551.8 million, down 1.6% from the first five months of 2021. Exports in the same period this year were 60.2 million square meters, down 21.9% from the same period in 2021. China, the US and Italy are the main buyers.
According to the Brazilian Footwear Association (Abicalçados), this is in stark contrast to leather exports. In the first five months of 2022, Brazilian footwear products exported 64.2 million pairs of shoes, with an export value of US$538.7 million, an increase of 30.3% and 66.5% year-on-year, respectively. In May alone, the total export volume reached 10.5 million pairs, and the export value was 104 million US dollars, an increase of 19.8% and 59.5% year-on-year respectively.
Haroldo Ferreira, president of the Brazilian Association of Footwear Associations, explained that the increase in exports to the United States is still decisive. From January to May this year, Brazil exported 10 million pairs of footwear to the United States, with an export value of $146.3 million. Sales volume and revenue increased by 87.2% and 108.6%, respectively.
