On August 25, 2022, the Ethiopian finished leather online promotion conference hosted by the Ethiopian Embassy in China and the General Consultation will be held. The heads of co-organizers such as the Ethiopian Ministry of Trade and Regional Cooperation, Ethiopian Leather Association, Ethiopian Leather Research Institute, China Leather Association, China Leather and Shoemaking Research Institute and some representatives of Chinese and Egyptian leather industry enterprises attended the meeting.
Li Yuzhong, vice chairman of China National Light Industry Federation and chairman of China Leather Association, delivered a speech at the meeting, briefly introducing the general situation of China's leather industry and the situation of China's imported Egyptian leather products. In 2021, with the improvement of the domestic new crown epidemic prevention and control situation, driven by factors such as the recovery of demand in the international trade market and the continuous improvement of the domestic market, the economic operation of China's leather industry will experience a recovery growth. In the whole year of 2021, China's leather industry achieved an export value of 90.33 billion US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 32.7%, a new high since 2016. In 2021, the total import value of the whole industry will be 19.69 billion US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 29.2%, a record high. In 2021, the total value of China's imports of Ethiopian leather products will be about 15 million US dollars, a year-on-year decrease of 9.8%. Among them, the import value of finished leather was US$13.5 million, a year-on-year decrease of 16.3%; the import value of semi-finished leather was US$1.877 million, a year-on-year increase of 253.5%; the import value of leather gloves was US$135,000, a year-on-year decrease of 57.5%; the import value of footwear products was US$101,000, A year-on-year decrease of 53.8%; the import value of travel goods and luggage was US$63,300, a year-on-year decrease of 71.1%.
He pointed out that China's imported leather products from Ethiopia are mainly finished leather and semi-finished leather, and leather products are less imported. In general, Ethiopia has a very small share of China's total imports of leather products and has great potential for development. Ethiopia has a relatively high stock of livestock, and has relatively rich raw skin resources, especially the high quality of sheep skins, which has good conditions for the development of the leather industry. At the same time, China implements a zero-tariff policy on 97% of Ethiopia's tax items. Except for patent leather and laminated patent leather, metal-plated leather, and other shoes and boots made of textile materials, most of the other leather products are subject to a 10% tariff. Enjoy zero tariff concessions. Therefore, Egyptian leather and leather products have great development space for export to China.
In terms of increasing the export of Ethiopian leather products to China, he put forward two suggestions: on the one hand, the Ethiopian government should provide better policy support and convenience for Chinese leather and shoe-making enterprises investing in Ethiopia. On the other hand, with the increase of China's per capita income, China's demand for mid-to-high-end products is increasing. It is recommended that Egyptian leather companies strengthen exchanges with Chinese companies, produce more marketable products, and increase exports to China. , to achieve win-win cooperation between the two parties.
Kassahun Gofe, Minister of Trade and Regional Cooperation of Ethiopia, Teshome, Ethiopian Ambassador to China, Director of Ethiopian Leather Research Institute and Chairman of Ethiopian Leather Association delivered speeches respectively, introducing the current trend of Ethiopian leather production and export and the relevant policies for the development of leather industry , international trade and investment opportunities in the leather industry, overall market prospects for the leather industry, etc.
