According to Cambodian customs data, in the first seven months of 2022, thanks to strong sales to the United States, the United Kingdom and other European markets, Cambodian footwear and related products exported more than 1 billion US dollars, an increase of 33.78% over the same period last year.
Last month alone, footwear exports were $198.6 million, up 38.6 percent from $143.25 million in July 2021, according to customs data.
Cambodian footwear exports are showing "positive growth" despite the ongoing impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and uncertainty over the outlook for global economic growth, according to Ly Kunthai, chairman of the Cambodia Footwear Association (CFA).
Kunthai attributed the surge in exports to factors such as Cambodia's political and economic stability, the expansion of global sales channels, low labor costs, and a favorable investment environment. The export of footwear products "has greatly contributed to Cambodia's economic growth and increased employment opportunities, as well as increased investment in the manufacture of footwear and related products.
Lim Heng, vice-chairman of the Cambodian Chamber of Commerce, said the rise in footwear exports will not only secure employment for thousands of workers, but will also attract more consumers' attention to the quality and credibility of products produced in the Kingdom of Cambodia. According to customs statistics, footwear and related products are one of Cambodia’s main export commodities, with an annual export value exceeding one billion US dollars and growing, which also proves that Cambodia’s footwear products meet international quality standards.”
There are about 70 shoe-making companies in Cambodia, most of which are invested by China, South Korea or Japan. Most of the raw materials needed to make shoes come from China, Vietnam and Thailand. Many well-known international brands such as Adidas, Clarks and Timberland process their products in Cambodia, Customs Statistics Observation reports.
According to customs statistics, last year, Cambodia's total exports of footwear and accessories products were US$1.39218 billion, an increase of 23.980% from US$1.112239 billion in 2020.
