On the 5th, the Russian Ministry of Energy announced the latest forecast of Russian electricity exports in 2021.
According to the latest forecast of the Russian Ministry of Energy, in 2021, Russia's electricity exports may hit the highest level since 2012, and electricity exports may nearly double in the first half of this year.
In terms of specific data, in the first half of 2021, Russia's electricity exports may reach 10.2 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh), compared with 5.2 billion kilowatt-hours in the same period last year, a year-on-year increase of nearly double (92.3%).
As a comparative data, in the first half of 2019 before the epidemic, Russia's electricity exports were only 9.3 billion kilowatt-hours.
So why did Russian power exports surge in the first half of this year?
According to the analysis of the Russian Ministry of Energy, there are two main reasons for this, specifically:
First, this is mainly driven by the surge in electricity demand in the Baltic countries!
In terms of specific data, in the first half of this year, these countries’ purchases of Russian electricity more than doubled year-on-year to 3 billion kWh, while Finland’s imports more than tripled to 3.9 billion kWh.
Second, it has something to do with the weather this year!
Specifically, in the first half of this year, part of the increase in Russian electricity exports was due to weather. That is, due to the long-term cold and dry winter and spring this year and the unusually hot summer, this also stimulated the electricity demand of Russia’s neighboring countries. Conducive to the export of Russian electricity.
So how much can Russia's electricity exports reach in 2021?
And just earlier this year, Russian power supplier Inter RAO said that in 2021, Russia's total power exports may reach 18 billion kilowatt-hours.
What do you think of it? How much do you think Russia’s electricity exports will reach this year?
