Nokia announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with China Mobile Research Institute to conduct joint research on 6G technology. According to this five-year agreement, the two parties will jointly define 6G requirements, application scenarios, network architecture and key technologies.
With the full deployment of 5G existing networks, the focus of wireless network research and development has begun to shift to 6G. The 6G joint research is based on the decades-long strategic partnership between Nokia and China Mobile. Based on an in-depth understanding of business needs and industry requirements, the two parties will work closely to promote industry consensus, including the establishment of industry organizations and industry alliances, promotion of the construction of research projects of related institutions, and co-hosting of related seminars.
Ms. Huang Yuhong, Deputy Dean of China Mobile Research Institute, said: “As a mobile communication system for 2030+, 6G will reshape society through “smart ubiquity” and promote society to a “digital twin” world. Based on this common vision, we I am very pleased to work with Nokia to achieve a unified global 6G standard and create an open and prosperous industrial ecosystem around the world."
Nokia Bell Chief Strategy and Technology Officer Jacob Kurian said: "We are working with China Mobile to establish a unified global standard for 6G. In addition, Nokia also recognizes that it is equally important to carry out research programs with different research directions in different regions according to specific conditions. Help us make full use of the advantages of the local ecosystem to meet specific local needs."
Nokia and China Mobile will conduct 6G research on technology definition, network architecture design, industrial upgrading, and key technologies including access architecture, protocol functions, air interface, network AI and related fields. Kurian said that through this joint research, the two parties will empower future interconnection and realize the seamless integration of the physical world, virtual world and biological world.
