Semiconductor makers such as TSMC and UMC will visit India and will discuss chip manufacturing in the electronics, communications equipment, healthcare systems and automotive industries, including the possibility of partnering with local companies. However, the date of the above-mentioned expedition has not yet been determined, and it is expected to arrive in India in the next few weeks.
In June this year, Gourangalal Das, an Indian government official, said in an interview that India would spend $30 billion to overhaul its technology industry and build a chip supply chain. At the time, Das said the investment plan was aimed at increasing local production capacity for semiconductors, displays, advanced chemicals, networking and telecommunications equipment, as well as batteries and electronics.
Das said the $30 billion will be used to build a complete supply chain ecosystem. About $10 billion of that was spent on building two chip factories and two display factories. In addition, India plans to provide about $7 billion to the electronics industry. The rest of the money goes to "ancillary services such as telecommunications, networking, solar photovoltaics, advanced chemistry and batteries".
The report also quoted sources as saying that the Indian side has identified an alternative location for the construction of the plant and will guarantee the supply of water and electricity. In addition, India will provide financial subsidies of up to 50% for projects under the scheme to support the establishment of semiconductor and display manufacturing centers.
