UN chief calls for 'excess profits tax' on big energy companies

2022-08-08

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on governments at the UN headquarters on the 3rd to impose an "excess profit tax" on large oil and gas companies that have made huge profits from the current energy crisis.

On the same day, Guterres said at the launch of the third report of the United Nations Global Food, Energy and Financial Crisis Response Team that with the recent surge in the prices of related products, the world's poorest people are facing hunger crisis and some developing countries are in debt. It is "immoral" for the big oil and gas companies to make record profits from the energy crisis while taking a heavy toll on the most vulnerable people and the natural environment.

Guterres said that the overall profits of the world's large energy companies in the first quarter of this year were close to 100 billion US dollars. Governments should levy "excess profits tax" on big energy companies and use the tax to help the most vulnerable through the crisis.

Rising energy prices are raising the cost of living for hundreds of millions of people as the Ukrainian crisis continues, according to a new report released by the Global Food, Energy and Financial Crisis Response Team. suffered a major setback. More worryingly, if prices continue to climb, only rich countries may be able to afford a potential "energy war", the report said.

In this regard, Guterres also called on all countries, including developed countries, to manage energy demand by saving energy, promoting public transportation, promoting nature-based energy solutions, etc., and accelerating the transition to renewable energy, increasing investment in clean energy . He said short-term policies and protections could be used to mitigate the crisis, but in the medium and long term, renewable energy should be supported, net-zero emissions targets achieved and global energy diversification promoted.
