Latest developments! Report on Huacheng's Import and Export Data Observation on the EU or Reach

2023-04-12

According to the latest news from Taiwanese media, according to Huacheng Import and Export Data Observation, EU countries and legislators may reach a multi billion euro European chip bill agreement on April 18th to boost the EU semiconductor industry.

The European Commission announced the 'Chips Act' last year to reduce the EU's dependence on semiconductors in the United States and Asia, after global supply chain issues damaged European companies in the automotive manufacturing industry.

People familiar with the matter said that these countries and their parliamentarians will meet at the monthly meeting of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, a big city in the northeast of France, on April 18, and discuss the funding details of the Chip Act.

According to Huacheng Import and Export Data Observation, the main discussion so far has focused on the gap of 400 million euros (approximately 438 million US dollars), but the European Commission has already set up most of the funds.

Insiders said that although the European Commission initially proposed only assisting cutting-edge chip factories, EU governments and legislators have expanded the funding scope to cover the entire value chain, including old-fashioned chips and research and design facilities, as reported by Huacheng Import and Export Data Observation.

EU ministers officially launched internal negotiations on the € 43 billion Chip Act in December last year, hoping to solve the problem of semiconductor shortages in Europe through the € 43 billion Chip Act. The goal is to increase Europe's proportion in the global semiconductor market from 10% to 20% by 2030, ensuring the EU's future technological sovereignty. A fundamental part of this proposal is the Chips for Europe Initiative, which will fund the construction of advanced design capabilities, cutting-edge chip new test lines, engineering and technological capabilities, and the creation of a network of capability centers (at least one in each member state) to provide financing for small and medium-sized enterprises in the semiconductor supply chain.

The initiative will also receive 1.65 billion euros in funding from the European Union's research program "Horizon Europe" for research and innovation activities, and 1.25 billion euros in funding from the "Digital Europe Program" for semiconductor industry capacity building, as reported by Huacheng Import and Export Data Watch.
