Strong demand for chips and record-breaking performance of NVIDIA

2021-08-23

The latest financial report released by the US chip manufacturer NVIDIA on the 18th showed that, benefiting from the continued strong demand for equipment from computer game players and other fields, its sales and net profit in the most recent fiscal quarter hit new highs.

Nvidia said that for the fiscal quarter ending in July, sales increased by 68% year-on-year to US$6.51 billion; net profit almost tripled to US$2.37 billion. Nvidia's sales and net profit were higher than the average expectations of analysts surveyed by FactSet.

In the second fiscal quarter, Nvidia’s game revenue was US$3.06 billion, a record high, an increase of 85% over the same period last year; data center sales revenue reached US$2.37 billion, an increase of 35% over the same period last year.

Nvidia said that the trend that benefits it has not yet peaked. The current fiscal quarter revenue should be around US$6.8 billion, higher than Wall Street’s expectations.

Qualcomm, which previously announced its earnings report, also harvested a record quarterly sales. Its revenue for the third fiscal quarter as of June was US$8.1 billion, which was higher than the average expected US$7.5 billion of analysts surveyed by FactSet.

Qualcomm said that the current quarter's sales may reach 9.2 billion U.S. dollars, which will set a record; net profit is expected to be approximately 2 billion U.S. dollars, a year-on-year increase of more than double.

The current global chip shortage situation is still facing the uncertainty of the rebound of the epidemic in the main producing countries.

Xu Daquan, executive vice president of Bosch (China) Investment Co., Ltd., revealed on the 17th that due to the severe epidemic in Malaysia, a semiconductor chip supplier’s Muar plant in Malaysia was again required by the local government to close some production lines until August after it was shut down for several weeks. On the 21st, this will directly affect the supply of many Bosch chips. It is expected that the supply will be basically out of supply in August.

According to public information, Malaysia, as a major production center in the global semiconductor supply chain, currently has more than 50 semiconductor companies setting up factories there. Local packaging and testing capacity accounts for about 13% of global packaging and testing capacity. Due to the repeated epidemics, the local semiconductor supply chain has also been severely impacted, and many semiconductor companies have encountered the dilemma of shutdown.
