Global wearable watch shipments in Q1 2022 will be 41.7 million pieces, down 4% year-on-year

2022-06-20

According to a report by industry analyst Canalys, global wearable watch shipments fell by 4% to 41.7 million in the first quarter of 2022, while the market transition from wristbands to wristwatches continued.

Among them, watches composed of basic bracelets and smart watches accounted for 76.6% of all wearable watch shipments in the quarter, an increase of 15% to 32 million units.

According to the report, after the first five quarters, shipments of basic bracelets suffered a sixth decline, down 37%. After shipments reached 27.9 million units in the fourth quarter of 2019, wristband shipments fell all the way, falling below 10 million for the first time. While the increase in wristwatch shipments helped offset the decline in basic wristbands, it was still unavoidable that the overall wearable device market would decline.

Sherry Jin, research analyst at Canalys, said, "Basic wristbands run a basic RTOS, but lack support for third-party apps, while smartwatches run a full-fledged OS that supports third-party apps. With a larger display , richer features and longer battery life, smartwatches can better meet their health tracking and digital lifestyle needs.”
