Samsung announces mass production of 3nm chips

2022-07-01

On June 30, 2022, the official Weibo of "Samsung Semiconductor" announced: "Samsung's 3nm GAA architecture process technology chip starts production." According to the current public information, this is the world's first mass-produced 3nm chip.

The GAA architecture is considered a key part of the 3nm process, which will be adopted by the world's top foundries in the near future. The key point is to change the structure of the transistor, which acts as a "current switch" inside the semiconductor, from 3D (FinFET) to 4D (GAA).

In August 2021, Jeong Eun-seung, chief technology officer of Samsung Electronics Device Solutions (DS) business unit, announced: "The GAA technology we are developing is ahead of our main competitor (TSMC), if we acquire this technology, Our foundry business will be able to grow further...", Jeong said during a keynote speech at the Samsung Technology & Careers Online Forum in August 2021.
