President Emmanuel Macron launched a strategy for the development of the electronics industry in Crolles, near Grenoble, on July 12, aiming to double French chip production by 2030.
Macron said: "The core of our challenge is to guarantee independence in the process of industry and re-industrialization, guaranteeing independence in the process of energy and digital transformation."
American GlobalFoundries and French-Italian chip maker STMicroelectronics invested 5.7 billion euros to build a chip production plant in Kroller. The heads of the two companies said it was part of the EU's "Chips Act" plan to double chip production by 2030. ".
The French government will provide substantial funding for this project, which is part of the France 2030 investment plan launched by President Macron in October 2021. The investment plan aims to develop the technology industry of the future. The key is to provide 7 billion euros of public funds to develop the electronics industry. The goal is to build more than a dozen factories or production lines for the production of electronic components and electronic systems. Due to increased global demand, coupled with the new crown epidemic and the tense international situation, the supply of electronic components has been scarce.
President Macron said that the electronics industry is "an industry within industries" and that "all the transitions we are going through depend on innovation and production (in this field)." The French 2030 investment plan uses a total of more than 16 billion euros of public and private funds to invest in the electronics industry, creating more than 5,000 jobs.
STMicroelectronics will manufacture 18-nanometer chips (currently 40-50-nanometer chips) at its Kroller facility. France's goal is to produce 10-nanometer chips, which would put France in the top five in chip technology.
Macron announced on the same day that he would spend 800 million euros for the chip production industry, of which 500 million was used for training, especially training engineers; this industry is currently facing difficulties in recruiting.
