Global cellular IoT module chip shipments increased 35% year-on-year in the first quarter

The latest research released by market research firm Counterpoint Research shows that in the first quarter of 2022, global cellular IoT module chip shipments increased by 35% year-on-year, maintaining a rapid growth trend.

From the perspective of the market, the Chinese market is the most important IoT chip consumption area, and the Chinese, North American and Western European markets account for more than 75% of the consumption. Among them, PC, router/CPE and industry are the top three applications of 5G IoT chips.

From the perspective of cellular IoT chip suppliers, Qualcomm ranks first with a 42% share. The suppliers ranked No. 2 to No. 7 are all from China. Among them, Ziguang Zhanrui ranked No. 2 with a share of 25%, Aojie Technology ranked No. 3 with a share of 7%, MediaTek, Mobile Core Communications, Chip Wing Information, Huawei HiSilicon behind.

Analysts said that in the first quarter of 2022, Qualcomm, Ziguang Zhanrui, and Aojie Technology occupied the top three, with shipments exceeding 75%. In terms of the global market, Qualcomm maintained its lead, followed by UNISOC and Sequans. As far as the Chinese market is concerned, UNISOC, Qualcomm and Aojie Technology lead in shipments.

Qualcomm maintains its lead in 9 of the 10 major global markets, only facing strong competition from local competitors in the Chinese market. Qualcomm has been expanding its portfolio of cellular IoT chipsets, such as premium 4G and 5G solutions for verticals such as retail, automotive, industrial robotics and smart cities.

UNISOC has strong performance in 4G (Cat1 and Cat1 bis) and NB-IoT technologies. In addition, UNISOC has steadily improved cellular technology to provide 4G Cat.4+ and 5G products. UNISOC has successfully expanded its customer base, adding Quectel, Guanghetong, China Mobile and other international module manufacturers.
