EU issued new rules: Smart devices will unify the charging interface in 2024, Huacheng Import and Ex

2022-11-15

After several years, the "interface dispute" finally ended, and the power on interface of portable intelligent devices ushered in unified management. Global technology companies, "some people are happy while others are sad", especially Apple, in the face of consumers' appeals for years and days, the "environment-friendly" shield and the "innovation promotion" old shield still failed to block the last "attack" of the Android army, Huacheng Import and Export Data Observation reported.

Apple is most affected

Huacheng Import and Export Data Observation reported that a few days ago, the European Conference and the European Council reached an agreement by 602 votes in favor and 13 votes against: from the autumn of 2024, mobile phones, tablets, cameras, stereos, keyboards, mice and other portable smart devices will use the USB Type-C charging interface uniformly.

A 40 month grace period is allowed for laptops using a unified charging interface. When purchasing electronic devices, consumers can choose whether to purchase additional chargers.

The European Conference issued a communiqu é indicating that this agreement not only establishes a unified interface for some electronic devices, but also can reduce electronic waste and make consumers' lives more convenient. It is estimated that this will reduce 11000 tons of e-waste annually.

"We have seven chargers and many interface converters for compatible connection between Apple and camera." An Apple user complained on the social platform that "the world has suffered a long time". The incompatibility and non versatility of various electronic devices make consumers have to buy different charging devices, resulting in unnecessary consumption and waste.

The European Union believes that the agreement can enable more chargers to be reused and reduce consumers' purchase of unnecessary rechargeable products. The European Commission estimates that about US $270 million will be saved annually.

The unified use of USB Type-C charging interface within the European Union has aroused heated debate. As soon as the news came out, the event that the iPhone 15 was forced to change its interface, which will be released next autumn, was on the hot search. At present, all Apple products use the Lightning interface, and Apple will become the most affected enterprise in the implementation of this standard.

According to the observation report of Huacheng import and export data, in the third quarter of 2022, the revenue of Apple accessories and other businesses dropped 7.87% year on year, while the growth in the first two quarters was fast, 13.41% and 12.38% respectively.

Guo Mingyong, an industry analyst, said that in order to reduce the impact before the standard comes into effect, the iPhone 15 could switch its charging interface to USB Type-C in 2023, and then replace it with other products such as Air Pods.

Chinese enterprises should actively participate in the formulation of international standards

The unified use of USB-Type C interface is only one aspect of the standardization of consumer electronics. Consumer electronic products are moving from "Internet of Everything" to "All Scene Smart Connect", and the unity and importance of industry standards are becoming increasingly prominent.

"Previously, China's consumer electronics industry standards mentioned most about 'order'. The core problem to be solved was how to protect consumers' rights and interests, such as returning goods for seven days without reason. Now, with the development of the times, industry competition is intensifying, and the market fittest survive. The reform of international standards, national standards, and industry standards will pay more attention to personal and property safety." Wu Xin, Secretary General of Consumer Electronics Branch of China Electronics Society, told reporters.

Relevant Chinese departments have been actively promoting the formulation of unified standards. At the fourth meeting of the 13th National Committee of the CPPCC, Ding Lei, member of the CPPCC National Committee and CEO of NetEase, put forward the proposal of "unifying the standard port of intelligent electronic device charger", and Huacheng Import and Export Data Observation reported.

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology replied to this proposal, saying that it attached great importance to the development of standards related to charging of intelligent electronic devices, encouraged Chinese enterprises to participate in the formulation of international standards related to unified charging interfaces, strengthened exchanges and cooperation with foreign standardization organizations and enterprises, and promoted China's standards to become international standards. "The equipment interface standard is one of the international standards. The formulation and implementation of relevant standards will promote the high-quality development of the consumer electronics industry." Peng Jianfeng, Executive Secretary General of China Electronic Video Industry Association, told reporters that the EU has promoted the integration and unification of charging interfaces and technologies, and pushed the industry into a new era of globalization. At the same time, China should increase its participation in the formulation of international standards, actively develop necessary patents for standards, and expand the pool of international standard patents. "We should participate, express China's views and make China's contributions."

Zhao Yan, director of the Consumer Electronics Industry Research Office of the Electronic Information Research Institute of the China Electronics Information Industry Development Research Institute, said to reporters that fields such as ultra-high definition video, virtual reality, smart home, and smart health will become an important engine to drive economic growth. Industry organizations and alliances are encouraged to carry out standard setting related work in relevant fields, and enhance their voice in the international standard system.
