How is the international trade situation of agricultural products this year?

2023-04-04

On the afternoon of March 2nd, the 2023 International Agricultural Products Market and Trade (Spring) Forum was successfully held in Beijing.

Sui Pengfei, Director of the International Trade Cooperation Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, delivered a speech and pointed out that holding the International Trade Agricultural Products Market and Trade Forum is a new attempt to create a high-level expert think tank for China internationally, scientifically and reasonably guide market expectations, and strengthen information exchange and sharing with the international agricultural products market. Next, China will focus on food security, climate change response, market and trade synergy, improve agricultural policies and standards, create more new formats, and promote high-quality development of agricultural product markets and trade.

Cheng Guoqiang, Chief Advisor of the Agricultural Trade Early Warning and Relief Expert Committee of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, released the "2023 (Spring) Report on the International Agricultural Product Market and Trade Situation". The report believes that the global agricultural production, logistics transportation, and trade order will gradually stabilize in 2023, and the international agricultural product market and trade environment are expected to improve. However, the tightening of supply and demand relations for some main grains and the downward trend of prices for most bulk agricultural products are noteworthy. China's international trade imports of major agricultural products are expected to show a high and stable trend.

During the forum, reporters from China Rural Network interviewed guests on some issues that netizens were concerned about.

In response to the prediction in the report that the prices of most bulk agricultural products will decline this year and the import of major agricultural products in China is expected to stabilize at a high level, Cheng Guoqiang, the Chief Advisor of the Agricultural Trade Early Warning and Relief Expert Committee of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, told reporters about the price trends of relevant domestic products this year and several issues that agricultural trade early warning experts need to pay attention to the most.

The report predicts that wheat imports will continue to maintain a high level in 2023. Liu Suyun, the chief expert of the Agricultural Trade Warning and Relief Expert Committee (Wheat) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, explained to reporters the main basis for supporting this judgment and her suggestions for domestic wheat growers.

In 2022, China's rice import volume reached a new high, with India and Pakistan being the largest source countries. Peng Chao, the chief expert of the Agricultural Trade Warning and Relief Expert Committee (Rice) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, compared data from previous years and analyzed the reasons behind it.

According to the needs of the international trade agricultural product market, which advantageous agricultural products will China vigorously promote to increase farmers' income? Hu Bingyi, a researcher at the Institute of Rural Development of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, provided his own ideas on this issue.
