The Public Service Union of Canada (PSAC) and the Customs and Immigration Union (CIU) issued a strike notice to the Canadian federal government on Tuesday after voting for the strike action last week. They announced yesterday that the work-in-provision strike will begin at all Canadian airports, land borders and commercial shipping ports at 6:00 am Eastern Time on Friday. They warned that there should be long queues and long delays for commercial traffic entering Canada.
Union employees of PSAC and CIU have been working without a contract for more than three years. They are seeking better protection against "toxic workplace culture" at CBSA and seeking greater equality with other law enforcement agencies in Canada.
"Daily de France" reported on Wednesday that the Committee of the Ministry of Finance has hired new negotiators for the negotiations between the two parties and has formally submitted a formal request to the Federal Public Sector Labor Relations and Employment Committee to find a mediator.
The Port of Vancouver has been hit by the epidemic and delays caused by wildfires in the province, while the Port of Montreal is fighting the low water level of the St. Lawrence River.
Many border workers were considered essential during the strike, but the union warned that the strike will have a serious impact on Canada’s import and export goods flow, services and personnel exchanges. At the same time, domestic and foreign mail and parcel exchanges and tariff payment will also be affected.
