President Jokowi emphasized that Indonesia will continue its efforts to stop the export of raw materials and develop downstream industries. He felt that for many years, Indonesia was just a "miner" role.
Joko explained that the downstream is very important so that Indonesia can derive more value from its natural resources.
"We can no longer export raw materials that have no added value. Although we make money from there (exporting raw materials) and get income from there, the added value is what we want. Indonesia’s mines are a great gift. Indonesia should have more The big advantage is not just staying on development and not being able to do downstream.
"What do you mean? If it's a mine, we shouldn't be just a digger. God’s gift to us is really great. But if we only send diggers out, they build a smelter there and then make semi-finished or finished products, we Make a purchase and then come back here (Indonesia), this is something we must gradually eliminate," he said.
Not only in the mining industry, Joko also hopes that the spirit of the downstream will also apply to other industries. He gave an example, such as fishing and furniture industry. "We are no longer allowed to be fishers, there must be a processing industry here, or when we have a timber boom, there is only logging, no timber industry and furniture industry, so our industry loses this opportunity," he said.
"Once again, we must produce products with high added value, combining the use of natural resources with the technological wisdom of protection," Jokowi added.
To achieve this, Joko hopes that state-owned enterprises and the private sector will make contributions. "We will stop exporting raw materials. We will force state-owned enterprises, private companies or investors to establish their own industries in the country," he concluded.
