China-ASEAN relations are accelerating on the fast lane

2022-07-27

Recently, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi has launched a series of diplomatic activities with Southeast Asian countries. He has attended the 7th Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Foreign Ministers' Meeting and the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting, visited five Southeast Asian countries, and presided over cooperation with Vietnam and Cambodia in Nanning, Guangxi. Bilateral Mechanism Meeting. China has frequent interactions with Southeast Asian countries, taking the lead in promoting the implementation of global development initiatives in neighboring countries, and injecting new impetus into regional and world peace, stability, prosperity and development.

The world is entering a new period of turbulence and change, and the Asia-Pacific region is not peaceful. In order to maintain their hegemonic status, some major powers have regained the Cold War mentality, restarted bloc politics, built exclusive "small circles", engaged in "decoupling", "broken chains" and "building walls", posing a serious challenge to regional peace and stability. Open or closed, cooperation or confrontation, unity or division, progress or regression, have become major issues facing countries in the region.

Facing the changes in the century and the epidemic of the century, China and ASEAN have worked together to promote open regionalism, accelerate the construction of comprehensive strategic partnership, strengthen strategic coordination, enhance solidarity and cooperation, and gain a firm foothold in the "flying cloud", and contribute to regional development and development. Global governance has a positive harmony.

China and ASEAN are closely linked by mountains and rivers, and have always been good neighbors, good friends and good partners with a shared destiny. Looking back on history, China was the first to establish a strategic partnership with ASEAN, the first to join the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia, the first to negotiate the establishment of a free trade area with ASEAN, the first to explicitly support ASEAN’s centrality in regional cooperation, and the first to publicly express its willingness to sign the “Southeast Asia Free Trade Zone”. Protocol to the Nuclear Weapons Zone Treaty. At the difficult time of China's fight against the epidemic, ASEAN countries immediately cared for condolences, donated money and materials, and cheered for China. After the spread of the epidemic, China has offered assistance to ASEAN brothers, shared anti-epidemic experience without reservation, provided vaccine assistance in a timely manner, and helped ASEAN build a barrier against the epidemic. China and ASEAN are fighting the epidemic together and tempering the deep friendship of sharing weal and woe.

China and ASEAN have become each other's largest trading partners. The bilateral trade volume has increased by 100 times compared with 30 years ago, and the cumulative direct investment between the two sides has exceeded 310 billion US dollars. The China-Laos Railway was successfully opened to traffic, and good news about a number of "One Belt, One Road" joint construction projects such as the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway, the China-Thailand railway, the China-Malaysia and China-Indonesia "two countries and two parks", etc. have been reported frequently. China and the five Mekong countries are building the Lancang-Mekong Economic Development Belt, China, Laos and Thailand are promoting the development concept of China Unicom, China and Malaysia are discussing the prospect of opening up the mid-line of the Trans-Asian Railway, and China and the Philippines plan to promote the four major “big agriculture, big infrastructure, big energy, and big humanities” Cooperation in key areas... The economic and trade exchanges between China and Southeast Asian countries have yielded fruitful results, and a blueprint for in-depth economic cooperation is being drawn.

For decades, China and Southeast Asian countries have explored and formed an ASEAN approach based on the important principles of mutual respect, consensus, and taking into account the comfort of all parties, fostering a positive thinking of common security, cooperative security, and comprehensive security, and contributing to lasting peace in Asia. The building has a solid foundation. Today, the "Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea" has been actively implemented, consultations on the "Code of Conduct in the South China Sea" have continued to advance, differences and disputes have been effectively managed, the maritime situation has remained generally stable, and the freedom of navigation and overflight has never been a problem. Military security exchanges are deepening, and cooperation in non-traditional security fields such as counter-terrorism, response to climate change, cyber security, combating transnational crimes, and disaster prevention and mitigation has yielded fruitful results.

This year marks the 55th anniversary of the founding of ASEAN and the first year of the China-ASEAN comprehensive strategic partnership. "One Vision, One Recognition, One Community" is the motto of ASEAN and a reflection of the spirit of unity and self-improvement among countries in the region. With the joint efforts of China and ASEAN, today's Southeast Asia has become a highland for development and a hot spot for cooperation, and will eventually become a common homeland of peace, tranquility, prosperity, beauty and friendship among countries in the region.
