Deepen international trade cooperation and make China ASEAN cooperation green and harmonious

2022-11-21

China and ASEAN should strengthen cooperation in the development and application of new energy technologies, green investment and financing, and capacity building, promote energy transformation and industrial structure upgrading, and welcome the establishment of the China ASEAN Clean Energy Cooperation Center to achieve low-carbon economic development and green and sustainable growth.

Climate change and environmental pollution are major challenges facing the human society today, and the technical measures and business models for green, environmental protection and sustainable development are also receiving more and more attention. At the 25th China ASEAN Summit held a few days ago, relevant parties adopted the Joint Statement on Strengthening China ASEAN Joint Sustainable Development. The statement said that China and ASEAN should strengthen cooperation in the development and application of new energy technologies, green investment and financing, capacity building and other aspects, promote energy transformation and industrial structure upgrading, and welcome the establishment of the China ASEAN Clean Energy Cooperation Center to achieve low-carbon economic development and sustainable green growth.

Promoting green transformation is an inevitable choice for achieving sustainable energy development. China and ASEAN countries, based on the principle of mutual benefit and win-win results, continue to deepen international trade cooperation and jointly create a better future of green economic cooperation.

China Singapore cooperation co ignites green sparks

As one of the few more developed economies in ASEAN countries, Singapore attaches great importance to green economic development. In February 2021, the Singapore government released the 2030 National Green Development Blueprint, setting clear goals in urban greening, sustainable living and green economy.

Singapore's strategic plan to accelerate the development of a green economy has added more opportunities to China Singapore cooperation. In March 2021, Huawei helped the Singapore solar company Sunseap to build a 5 megawatt offshore photovoltaic power station in the Johor Strait, which is one of the largest offshore floating power stations in the world. It is expected to reduce about 4258 tons of carbon dioxide emissions, greatly helping Singapore achieve the zero carbon goal. In July 2021, the 60 MW water photovoltaic project of Tenge Reservoir in Singapore, which is contracted by China Energy Engineering Group Shanxi Institute, will be put into operation. Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said that the Tenge Reservoir water photovoltaic project is an important milestone towards sustainable "green Singapore".

Chen Zhensheng, former Minister of Trade and Industry of Singapore, once said that Singapore is determined to become a global "shining green spark" and a model for global cities in terms of energy production and management systems. Singapore plans to achieve carbon peak in 2030 and carbon neutralization in 2050, especially in carbon emission reduction. China Singapore attaches great importance to the development and utilization of hydrogen energy. In November this year, Dalian Hydrogen Energy Industry Development Promotion Association and Singapore Enterprise Development Bureau jointly hosted the "Singapore China (Dalian) Hydrogen Energy Round Table Conference", which held exchanges and discussions on the establishment of a hydrogen energy cooperation mechanism between the two sides to promote sustainable development and cooperation in the field of hydrogen energy in the future; The Singapore Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association and the Dalian Hydrogen Energy Association also signed a memorandum of cooperation. The two sides will discuss the establishment of an exchange platform in the future, such as jointly holding forums or technical seminars, organizing representative visits and other forms of cooperation.

China's Technology Helps Thailand's Green Transformation

In Gueyepong, Thailand, the wind resource is very rich, with rolling hills and 32 white wind turbines with huge blades rotating against the wind. This is part of the operation and maintenance wind farm project of the Chinese company in Gueyapung. With excellent quality and service, wind turbines independently designed by China have settled down and taken root in the Thai market.

China Thailand cooperation in green energy is far beyond wind power projects. In 2021, Chinese enterprises will help build the integrated floating photovoltaic project of Sirindhorn Dam in Uven Province, Thailand, which will be connected to the grid for power generation. This project is the largest floating optical fiber project in Thailand, and also the first comprehensive energy project combining floating optical fiber and hydropower station of Thailand Electricity Authority.

In addition, China's new energy vehicles also provide people in ASEAN countries with green and environmentally friendly travel modes. As ASEAN countries actively encourage the development of new energy vehicle industry and continue to introduce a series of supporting policies, China's new energy vehicles ushered in a new opportunity of "going to sea in international trade".

New energy vehicles from China have a strong appeal to the people of ASEAN countries in terms of technology, energy consumption and appearance design. According to the prediction of the International Renewable Energy Agency, the sales of new energy vehicles in Southeast Asia will increase to 10 million by 2025.

At present, Thailand is the largest market for new energy passenger vehicles consumption in ASEAN. From January to August this year, the sales of new energy vehicles in Thailand accounted for 65% in ASEAN. Especially with the entry into force and implementation of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (RCEP), the international trade barriers for Chinese automobile brands to enter the ASEAN market have been further reduced. From the perspective of the structure of China's international trade exports to RCEP member countries, the international trade exports of automobiles grew rapidly, and new energy vehicles "contributed a lot". It is understood that China's SAIC MG, Great Wall Motors, BYD, etc. have successively invested and set up factories in Thailand and entered the pure electric vehicle market in Thailand.

While deepening cooperation between the government and enterprises, how to make good use of the mechanism and further strengthen policy exchanges is also an important aspect of green economic cooperation between China and ASEAN. We will make good use of the Clean Energy Forum and the New Energy Forum to build a China ASEAN Clean Energy Cooperation Center. Through practical cooperation, the two sides will jointly address climate change and ecological environment challenges, develop a green economy, and promote regional sustainable development.
