US CPSC said that about one-third of magnet recalls involve children's toys

The supply chain is expected to continue to be delayed. Many companies offer substantial discounts. Some Americans have already shopped in advance. Many of the popular products contain magnets. According to CPSC’s recent "Recalls in Review", about one-third of magnet recalls involve kids toys.

u3000u3000 Lanhai Yiguan.com learned that, according to data from the CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission), many products involving magnets have been recalled over the years.

u3000u3000 1. Approximately one third of the recalls are children's toys. Including magnetic puzzles, tic-tac-toe games, magnetic darts, and dolls with magnetic accessories and movable dolls. Most of the problem is that when a small magnet in a toy falls out, it may be swallowed by a child.

u3000u3000 When multiple magnets are swallowed, the magnets will connect in the human intestine, causing intestinal obstruction, perforation, sepsis, and even death. Swallowing single or multiple magnets may also cause suffocation of young children.

u3000u3000 2. About 28% of the recalls are real magnets, including individual magnets and magnet sets, followed by 14% of magnet construction kits.

3. The remaining magnet-related recalls are aimed at various other products, such as children’s school supplies, children’s clothing, children’s bicycle helmets, science tools, writing boards, travel mugs with magnetic lids, flashlights in personal safety tools, and Swimming pool door.

u3000u3000 2. CPSC tried to promulgate magnet product standards, but was eventually revoked

u3000u3000 Since 1998, there have been at least 58 recalls involving magnets, 56 of which occurred after 2005.

u3000u3000 CPSC began to closely monitor magnets, magnet sets, and products containing magnets in 2007, and recalled 11 products in the case of reports that children swallowed magnets and suffered serious internal injuries.

u3000u3000Similar recalls continued until 2008, and magnets that violated federal lead paint standards were also recalled.

u3000u3000 Unlike many consumer products, there is no mandatory federal safety standard specifically for regulating magnets or magnet groups. CPSC tried to promulgate a mandatory federal safety standard to solve the problem of strong magnets, and issued the regulation on October 3, 2014.

u3000u3000 According to this regulation, the flux index (magnetic flux coefficient) of any magnet that meets the CPSC "small part" definition must not be higher than the specified level. However, the rule was eventually revoked by the Federal Court and removed from the Federal Regulations of the United States.

u3000u3000 However, CPSC continues to monitor and recall powerful magnets.

u3000u3000 CPSC sued Zen Magnets LLC for the first time in 2012 for its powerful "Zen Magnets Rare Earth Magnet Balls" and forced the company to recall its products. Previous negotiations with CPSC failed to reach a voluntary recall plan. Zen Magnets finally announced the recall of the product in August 2021.

u3000u3000 Three, more than two-thirds of the recalls are due to the magnet being swallowed

u3000u3000 1. According to the information provided by the CPSC recall announcement, more than two-thirds of the recalls are because small magnets may be swallowed by children and young people.

u3000u30002. Magnets used in science classes as scientific tools were often recalled in 2007 and 2008 because the paint of the magnets contained excessive lead.

u3000u30003. There are also several recalls because the magnets in the product can cause other injuries.

u3000u3000 For example, a travel mug with a magnetic lid was recalled last year because the magnetic slider on the lid may pop out and burn consumers. The flashlight in the personal safety tool was recalled in 2006. According to the recall announcement, the magnets in the flashlights may be strong enough to interfere with implantable cardioverter defibrillators for heart patients.

u3000u3000 Lanhai Yiguan.com learned that the most common remedy provided by the recall company is to replace the product or part of the product (57% of the recall). In less common cases, remedies may be limited to refunds (38% of recalls), repairs, or simply instructions to give up the product.

u3000u3000 More than half of the recall announcements require consumers to return the product to the recalling company, especially those involving risks associated with children swallowing magnets. In response to lead violations of federal safety standards, product failures, and injuries unrelated to the ingestion of magnets (that is, the risk of tearing or suffocation of non-magnet parts), the recall announcement does not require consumers to return the recalled products.
