Mattel and Max team up to start making aerospace toys

2022-08-02

Musk's SpaceX and Mattel are teaming up to create new rocket ship toys for children. Fast Company notes that the announcement comes on the anniversary of the first human landing on the moon.

Mattel noted that it will begin releasing SpaceX-inspired toys under its Matchbox brand in 2023. Additionally, SpaceX-inspired collectibles will begin appearing on its collaborative and direct-to-consumer platform Mattel Creations.

The two companies have reached a multi-year agreement with the goal of creating and marketing products that inspire children and collectors to "dig into their inner space explorer."

Statement by Spacex & Mattel

SpaceX Vice President Brian Bjelde shared his thoughts on the partnership. He talked about SpaceX's belief in a future where humans will be among the stars.

"At SpaceX, we believe that, fundamentally, there is a more exciting future than our own, beyond the stars."

"We look forward to working with Mattel to help inspire the next generation of space explorers and enthusiasts."

Nick Karamanos, Mattel’s senior vice president of entertainment partnerships, said he’s very excited about Mattel’s partnership with SpaceX to inspire children.

"We are proud of our ability to create products and experiences that honor cultural moments and inspire people."

"With space exploration advancing faster than ever, we're excited to partner with SpaceX to help inspire limitless modes of space exploration in all children."

Musk talks about the importance of being a multiplanetary species

When I interviewed Elon Musk earlier this month, he told me that he thinks we should have a sense of urgency while we still have the ability to achieve multiplanetary life.

"I think from our technological standpoint, people are living in an era of growing civilization, so they naturally think that's what it is and that civilization will keep growing."

"Essentially, what I'm trying to say is that we should, with a sense of urgency, achieve multiplanetary life within our means. This is the first time that a window of opportunity for life to become multiplanetary has opened, and this window of opportunity may It's going to take a long time to open, it could be a short time."

"But I think we'd better assume it's going to be open for a while and act now. Now, from a resource perspective. Sometimes people think, is this going to take all the resources on the planet?" No. My suggestion is that we spend less than 1% of our resources - maybe in that order - to allow life to survive on multiple planets and to protect the future of life. "
