U.S. House of Representatives passes two bills to protect women's abortion rights

2022-07-20

The U.S. House of Representatives voted on the 15th local time to pass two bills aimed at protecting women's abortion rights at the federal level.

On the same day, the House of Representatives passed the "Women's Health Protection Act" with 219 votes in favor and 210 votes against, and the voting results were basically divided by party. The bill stipulates that abortion cannot be prohibited until a woman's 24th week of pregnancy; after 24 weeks, if the pregnant woman's life is in danger, medical institutions can still provide abortion services.

After that, the House of Representatives passed the Guaranteeing Access to Abortion Services Act by a vote of 223 in favor and 205 against. The bill prohibits punishment for women who travel to other states to seek abortion services.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Democrat Pelosi said in a speech that day, "The Supreme Court's ruling overturning Roe v. Wade is a violation of women's fundamental rights, and it is extremely outrageous. After 50 years, women will once again stand for the best." Basic Rights Struggle".

Republicans opposed both bills. Republican Congressman Cathy McMorris Rodgers said "abortion is the most serious human rights issue of our time."

Next, the two bills will be discussed and voted on in the Senate. The Senate currently has 50 Democrats and Republicans each, and both bills need 60 votes to pass.

In the current Senate, only two Republican senators, Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins, publicly support women's abortion rights. The US media believes that the two bills are unlikely to be passed by the Senate.

On June 24, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the Roe v. Wade case, which protected women's abortion rights, meaning that women's abortion rights will no longer be protected by the U.S. Constitution. It is reported that 13 states have abortion bans in effect after Roe v. Wade was overturned.
