FDA approves fourth COVID-19 vaccine, Novavax

2022-07-28

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the Novavax new crown vaccine for adults under emergency authorization on the 13th local time. This is the fourth new crown vaccine approved by the FDA after Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson.

It is reported that there are two doses of Novavax new crown vaccine, using more traditional recombinant protein technology, rather than the mRNA technology used by Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. Recombinant protein vaccine technology has been used for many years in hepatitis B and HPV vaccines.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 77% of U.S. adults have completed the new crown vaccination, but there are still about 27 million adults who have not yet received a dose of the new crown vaccine. Several experts expressed the hope that the Novavax vaccine, which uses more traditional vaccine technology, can dispel the doubts about the safety of the vaccine for those who have not yet been vaccinated, and get vaccinated as soon as possible.

Novavax data shows that the Novavax new crown vaccine is 90.4% effective in preventing symptomatic infection.

Next, the CDC expert committee will evaluate the Novavax vaccine, and after being recommended by the CDC, the Novavax vaccine will be officially put into use.

Recently, with the rapid spread of new subtypes BA.5 and BA.4 of Omicron strains in the United States, the number of new coronavirus cases and deaths in the United States are on the rise again. CDC data shows that the number of new cases on the 12th reached 185,000, and the average daily number of new cases in the past 7 days was 123,000; in terms of deaths, 606 new deaths were added on the 12th, and the average daily death toll in the past 7 days was 342 people.

According to a study by the University of Washington, the actual number of people infected with the new crown may be 7 times higher than the statistics because many people choose to self-test at home and not report the results.

According to the latest statistics from Johns Hopkins University in the United States, as of 19:00 on the 13th, the cumulative number of confirmed cases of new crown in the United States exceeded 89.12 million, and the number of deaths exceeded 1.022 million.
