China is one of the countries with the richest bamboo resources in the world, with 857 species of bamboo plants belonging to 44 genera. According to the results of the Ninth Forest Resources Census, China's bamboo forest area is 6.41 million hectares, ranking first in the world in terms of bamboo species, area, and yield. China is also the earliest country in the world to recognize and utilize bamboo, with a long history of bamboo culture. The bamboo industry is linked to the first, second, and third industries. Bamboo products have high value and wide uses. More than 100 series of nearly 10000 products have been formed, and are used in multiple fields such as food, packaging, transportation, and medicine.

Over the past 20 years, China's bamboo industry has developed rapidly, with increasingly rich product types and application functions. From the perspective of the international market, China occupies a pivotal position in the international trade of bamboo products. It is the most important producer, consumer, and exporter of bamboo products in the world, as well as a major importer of bamboo products. According to customs data, in 2021, the total import and export trade of bamboo and rattan products in China reached 2.781 billion US dollars, of which, the total export trade of bamboo and rattan products was 2.755 billion US dollars, the total import trade was 26 million US dollars, the total import and export trade of bamboo products was 2.653 billion US dollars, and the total import and export trade of rattan products was 128 million US dollars. Affected by the global COVID-19, customs data show that the growth rate of China's bamboo product export trade slowed down from 2019 to 2020, with growth rates of 0.52% and 3.10% in 2019 and 2020 respectively. In 2021, China's export trade of bamboo products rebounded, with a growth rate of 20.34%.

According to customs data, from 2011 to 2021, China's total export trade of bamboo tableware increased significantly, from 380 million US dollars in 2011 to 1.14 billion US dollars in 2021, and its proportion in China's total export trade of bamboo products increased from 25% in 2011 to 43% in 2021; The total export trade of bamboo and bamboo products grew steadily before 2017, reaching a peak in 2016. In 2011, the total export volume was $240 million, compared to $320 million in 2016, dropping to $230 million in 2020, and rebounding to $240 million in 2021, accounting for a maximum of about 18% of China's total export trade of bamboo products in 2016, and dropping to 9% in 2021. From 2011 to 2021, the overall import trade volume of bamboo products in China showed a fluctuating trend. With the demand for green products in domestic and foreign markets, it is urgent to find new growth points to stimulate bamboo product exports. Compared with China's export trade of bamboo products, China's import trade of bamboo products is not large. The main trade products of bamboo products in China are bamboo tableware and bamboo woven products. The import and export trade of bamboo products in China is mainly concentrated in the developed southeast coastal areas, while Sichuan Province and Anhui Province, which are rich in bamboo resources, are less involved in the trade.
