Customs data shows that Belarusian timber imports increased by 154% year-on-year

2023-06-15

According to customs data, at the beginning of June, the Minister of Economy, the Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food, and the Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications of Economy of Belarus visited China, which is another exchange activity after President of Belarus President Lukashenka's visit to China in February. The close visit marks the strengthening of trade relations between the two countries, and Chinese experts and traders are also optimistic about deepening cooperation between China and Belarus.

According to customs data, since the Russia Ukraine dispute, Belarus has gradually lost its EU market and turned to developing sales markets in the Middle East and Asia, with the Chinese market being one of them. At the exchange meeting, China expressed support for the export of high-quality products from Belarus to China.

According to customs data, the quantity of timber exported from Belarus to China has shown an increasing trend since this year. Customs data shows that as of April, the export of timber from Belarus to China has increased by 154% year-on-year, totaling 282800 cubic meters. According to the current analysis of trade relations between the two countries, this value will continue to increase.

Meanwhile, Purfine Wood Trade Agency, which has been doing business with Belarus since 2012, also stated that customs data shows that its company's trade with Belarus has increased by 20-30% year-on-year this year, with most of its wood products.

Chinese traders can pay in RMB, which to some extent resists the potential risks and costs brought by the US dollar. In addition, the price and quality advantages of Belarusian wood make it competitive in the Chinese market

Overall, the potential for timber trade cooperation between China and Belarus is enormous. However, due to factors such as underdeveloped overseas transportation facilities and low efficiency of port operations, transportation capacity is currently limited. If upgraded and constructed in transportation, the trade volume between the two countries is expected to double.
