The U.S. furniture market starts a wave of price increases

2021-04-24

According to US media reports, affected by market factors, the US furniture market is starting a wave of price increases.

Lorts, a US custom-made household furniture manufacturer, will increase the price of all new orders by 3% from April 12.

The company's CEO Michelle Lorts (Michelle Lorts) announced the price increase to the company's customers via email. She wrote in the email:

"As we all know, whether it is from the perspective of public health and safety, or from the perspective of market operations, last year was a very challenging year... Fortunately, this also lets us know how tenacious, determined, and united we are.

"In other words, we are very happy to see that the furniture industry is in a rebound and recovery trend, but at the same time it also means that we are also facing the problem of rising prices of incoming goods due to the surge in demand, the bad weather and the shortage of manpower. For us, the cost of the most important processing material has risen by as much as 25%. We all hope that this situation is only temporary and can return to normal in the short term."

In fact, this is by no means the largest furniture company in the United States that announced price increases this year. On April 1st of this year, High Point Furniture Industries (HPFI), a manufacturer of hard furniture and office furniture, stated that it would increase prices for all products by 6% from May 1st.

HFPI pointed out that since the beginning of this year, the prices of steel, wood, and sponge have risen by 25%, 15% and 40%, respectively, as important raw materials for manufacturing furniture. In addition, transportation costs have also risen by more than 25%.

It can be said that this wave of rising raw material costs in the United States did not come at the right time. In the past six months, the American furniture market demand has increased sharply. Among them, the number of civilian furniture orders in December 2020 increased by 27% year-on-year, and the annual order volume also achieved an increase of 15%. When strong market demand encounters uncontrollable cost increases, most companies continue to fall into a passive situation-whether to cut profits and stabilize customers, or pressure to negotiate price increases, I am afraid that no company can survive the market turmoil.
