Strong demand for tropical timber from abroad may push up my country's timber prices

2021-08-16

This year, the side effects of Brexit have become more pronounced. Britain’s imports from the European Union have fallen by 29% compared to the same period last year. This is not enough to fill the gap in the timber market, and the UK has begun to increase imports of tropical timber.

Over the same period, Canada's imports of timber from South America and Africa have increased in proportion far exceeding the demand in previous years. The import volume of some mahogany timber increased by about 25%, and the import volume of some tropical sawn timber even increased by more than 90%. The import volume of single mahogany increased by 20.89%.

In tropical areas, especially in Africa, timber output is steadily decreasing. With the UK and other countries importing large amounts of African tropical timber, it may lead to a decrease in the quantity of tropical timber flowing to my country, thereby pushing prices higher.
