Due to the interruption of domestic production, Vietnam's exports of timber and timber products declined in September. According to VIFOREST, the goal of achieving US$14 billion in export sales in 2021 is now unlikely to be achieved.
The total export value of timber and wood products in September 2021 is estimated to be US$750 million, a decrease of 35% compared to September 2020; the total export value of timber products is estimated to be US$420 million, a year-on-year decrease of 55%. So far (January-September 2021), the total export of timber and timber products has increased by 31% and is estimated to reach 11.1 billion U.S. dollars. Wood products accounted for a total of 8.4 billion US dollars (also an increase of 30.9%).
From September 14 to 21, 2021, the export value of timber and timber products was US$177.8 million, an increase of 2.2% over the previous week. Among them, the sales of wooden furniture was 98.5 million US dollars, an increase of 5.1% over the previous week.
Timber imports in September 2021 are estimated at 505,500 cubic meters, valued at US$182 million. Compared with August 2021, total sales volume and value increased by 3.2% and 1.9% respectively, but compared with the same period last year, they fell by 2.8% and 18.3%. In the first nine months of 2021, the cumulative imported timber (logs and sawn timber) is estimated to be 5.15 million cubic meters, valued at US$1.71 billion, a year-on-year increase of 21.7% in quantity and a 33.6% increase in value.
From September 14 to 21, 2021, Vietnam's log and sawn timber imports were 55.2 million U.S. dollars, a decrease of 7.1% from the previous week.
The epidemic continues to severely affect production and enterprises. The export of ceramics and wooden arts (wooden handicrafts) fell sharply in September 2021, estimated at US$7 million, down 45% from August 2021 and down 52% from the same period last year.
