In an interview with Lithuania's ELTA news agency on the 8th, Lithuania's Deputy Minister of the Environment, Danas Augustis, said that in order to solve the problem of timber shortages caused by sanctions against Russia, Lithuania decided to take action to prevent more timber from being exported to other EU countries.
According to Augustis, Lithuania has suspended the import of timber from Russia and Belarus in order to implement EU sanctions, which has caused domestic timber shortages. Due to the existence of free trade agreements between EU countries, Cube cannot directly restrict exports to other EU countries, but plans to adjust trade rules and determine the export volume according to these rules.
In recent years, domestic timber prices in Lithuania have continued to rise. The ELTA news agency quoted data showing that in 2021, the price of timber in Lithuania will increase by 40% year-on-year, and in 2022, it will increase by about 20% year-on-year. Benotas, head of the Lithuanian Timber Association, said the rise in timber prices is often caused by domestic speculators.
