Kronospan, the world's largest panel manufacturer, is preparing to spend more than 400 million euros (about 2.7 billion yuan) to build a new panel manufacturing facility for the local furniture industry in Tortosa, Catalonia, Spain factory.
This will be one of the largest foreign investments ever made in the region and will create more than 185 direct jobs and around 1,500 indirect jobs in timber supply, logistics, maintenance and services.
Javier Macicior, general manager of Kronospan Spain, said that this is a 100% sustainable project, in line with the principles of the circular economy. This investment will establish a business cluster of related companies near the new site, which will greatly promote the local economic development.
The new factory will use up to 100 percent recycled wood, mainly from scrap furniture collected by Kronos State suppliers. The new facility plans to receive 100 truckloads of recycled wood a day and wash, crush and process the wood. State-of-the-art particleboard presses will be used during processing, capable of producing 2,000 cubic meters of particleboard per day. The planned production is 720,000 cubic meters per year, which could help reduce the CO2 footprint of the Catalonia region by 720,000 tons per year.
Infrastructure construction has started in February 2022, covering an area of 25 hectares (about 250,000 square meters), including a 40-meter-high cleaning tower and photovoltaic cells for separating wood chips and waste. The heat required for the production process will come from biomass boilers fueled by bark and processed wood waste. Solar panels installed on the factory roof will provide clean and renewable energy to the production line.
