Russian log exports fell by more than 50% in the first seven months

2022-08-23

Since July 10, the EU has officially imposed sanctions on Russian wood products. Since the ban has just been implemented, and before the ban took effect, European businesses have imported and hoarded Russian wood in large quantities, so that Russia's wood exports are in the top seven month did not show a significant decline.

From January to July 2022, the export volume of Russian sawn timber, which is subject to numerous sanctions, fell by 3.6%, which was 10% lower than expected, and the export volume was 15.4 million cubic meters.

At the same time, log exports more than halved, from 7.8 million cubic meters to 3.9 million cubic meters, proving that the de facto ban on unprocessed softwood and valuable hardwood exports from the beginning of the year has paid off .

Among them, export deliveries to Hong Kong, Bulgaria, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Finland, Austria and the Netherlands saw the largest declines. Singapore, China, Japan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Iraq, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates increased imports of Russian timber.

According to the Russian Forest Statistics Service, this is only a small decrease. In general, the fluctuation range is within the normal range, and the decline in export indicators is acceptable against the background of the substantial increase in export shipments last year.

It is highly probable that by the end of the year, the parallel import of Russian cedar, birch plywood, particleboard and other wood products to Europe through China will once again increase sawn timber shipments.
