According to customs data, in the first 11 months of 2022, Vietnam's plywood exports totaled 1.1 billion US dollars, ranking fifth among the world's five largest plywood exporters.

During this period, customs data showed that China ranked first with US $5.89 billion in exports, followed by Indonesia with US $2.51 billion in total exports. According to customs data, Russia and Brazil ranked third and fourth with US $1.9 billion and US $1.2 billion respectively.

Vietnam has made great efforts to develop its domestic wood processing industry. According to customs data, it has been among the top five plywood exporters in the world since 2018. The total export volume has also jumped from $774 million in 2018 to $1.2 billion in 2021 and $1.1 billion in 2022.

Not only that, Vietnam has a large share in the global plywood market. According to customs data, the United States is one of its largest markets, accounting for 40%; In Asia, in addition to China and Japan, South Korea is also its main market, accounting for about 24%.

However, last September, the United States Department of Commerce announced the extension of the deadline for the issuance of the final conclusion of the anti-dumping and anti-subsidy investigation on hardwood and plywood imported from Vietnam, which also affected the plywood industry in Vietnam.

Against the background of the epidemic and weak demand in the European and American markets, the Vietnamese plywood industry stabilized its pace in 2022, handing over a total export volume of US $100 million less than that in 2021. In addition, Vietnam's timber and wood products exports did not seem to have been greatly affected by the epidemic and the decline in demand, and achieved the target set in 2022 without any risk.

As the world consumer market is increasingly inclined to more environmentally friendly and durable sustainable development products, Vietnam is also formulating sustainable timber supply, and its plantation area of artificial forest is also increasing. In addition to increasing the sustainable development of timber supply, the large-scale planting of artificial forests is also reducing Vietnam's dependence on foreign raw materials.

In the current international plywood market, the Russian plywood industry has been greatly hit by the sanctions imposed by the European and American markets. Its export volume and price have plummeted in 2022, and its output has once dropped to the lowest level in 10 years. At the same time, Vietnam's plywood industry still has great potential and strong development momentum. If the Russian plywood industry has not recovered this year, it is expected that Vietnam will probably surpass Russia and become one of the three largest plywood exporters in the world.

In addition, Brazil, which is transforming the export pattern of wood products and increasing the development of domestic wood processing industry, is also Vietnam's opponent that cannot be ignored.
