According to customs data, the export of Vietnam's timber market does not decrease but increase

2023-02-21

According to customs data, the export value of forest and timber industry is expected to reach 16.9 billion US dollars in 2022, with a year-on-year increase of 6.1%. According to customs data, it mainly exports to China, the United States, the European Union, Japan and South Korea, and purchases forest products worth 15.48 billion dollars from Vietnam, accounting for more than 90% of the forest products in Vietnam.

Decreased orders for wood products: In the past three years, the epidemic and economic turbulence have seriously disrupted the wood supply chain. Against the background of insufficient supply of raw materials, rapidly rising logistics costs, and labor shortage, the export data of Vietnam's wood and wood products industry is still growing, and the trend is not decreasing. Customs data show that in the last few months of 2022, the intensification of global inflation has had a negative impact on the trade orders of Vietnam's timber industry, making the number of orders of exporters plummet.

According to customs data, wood chips and wood chips are the savior: although Vietnam's exports of wood products and household products are declining, the exports of wood chips and wood chips have increased significantly. Wood chips are mainly exported to Europe, Japan and South Korea, and wood chips are mainly exported to China. According to insiders, Chinese buyers imported a large amount of wood chips from Vietnam for the paper industry, and many Vietnamese wood traders also supplied them to Chinese pellet factories. As the domestic timber harvest cannot meet the supply, China will continue to import timber from neighboring countries, which ushers in a good opportunity for Vietnamese timber exporters.

According to customs data, the sales of these two products are expected to be about 2.8 billion to 2.9 billion dollars this year. The future goal of Vietnam's forestry sector is to reach US $17.5 billion in total forestry exports by 2023, with a growth rate of 5-5.5% and a forest coverage rate of not less than 42%.
