As early as December 2020, the Australian government has formulated mandatory safety and information standards for "button batteries and consumer products containing such batteries", and set an 18-month transition period for the standards involved.
From June 22, 2022, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) will impose fines of up to 1 million Australian dollars for the sale of any non-compliant button batteries and related products.
On June 1, 2021, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (accc) officially issued the "Mandatory Standards and Supplier Guidelines for Button Batteries and Consumer Products Containing Such Batteries"
*"Supplier guidance for the mandatory standards for button/coin batteries and consumer goods containing button/coin batteries.".
This guide mainly helps suppliers of such products to better understand the new compliance testing standards for safety products, including the design requirements for such battery compartments, child-resistant packaging, and safety information warnings.
The relevant mandatory standards are as follows
1. Consumer Goods (Products Containing Button/Coin Batteries) Safety Standard 2020
Design and construction
Consumer products containing button/button batteries must meet safety requirements and undergo compliance testing
If the product contains a button/button battery that can be replaced by the user, the product must have a safe battery compartment to prevent it from being opened by young children.
Compliance and testing
The supplier must issue proof that the product complies with this safety standard. Suppliers can choose to test according to the product-specific standards listed in the safety standards or non-product characteristic standards (Lithium Technologies standards).
2. Consumer Goods (Products Containing Button/Coin Batteries) Information Standard 2020
Signs and warnings
Products related to information standards must contain safety warning information, which must be clearly visible, eye-catching and easy to read.
The safety warning information is marked differently based on the product and packaging.
As shown in the figure:

3. Consumer Goods (Button/Coin Batteries) Safety Standard 2020
Design and construction
Button/button batteries must be in child-resistant packaging that meets the specified compliance tests. That is, the packaging needs to be able to limit the possibility of infants and children access to the battery.
Fourth, Consumer Goods (Button/Coin Batteries) Information Standard 2020
Information ID
Any packaging used to provide button/button batteries must clearly identify safety warning information.
Button/button batteries with a diameter of 20 mm or larger must be marked with a "keep away from children" sign on the battery.
