13 Chinese companies shortlisted in the top global chemical "club"

2021-09-30

Recently, the US "Chemical Weekly" released the latest "Global Chemical Companies Billion Dollar Club" rankings. In terms of sales revenue in 2020, BASF continues to top the list, Sinopec still ranks second, and Dow Chemical ranks third.

German chemical giant BASF ranked first in the billion-dollar club rankings for the 10th time in 13 years. The fourth and fifth places are Formosa Plastics and Exxon Mobil, which have swapped positions with last year's ranking. Ranked 6-10 are: Ineos, China National Chemical Corporation, Saudi Basic Industries Corporation, Lyondell Basel and Mitsubishi Chemical.

This year’s billion dollar club ranking threshold is 2.8 billion U.S. dollars. A total of 13 Chinese companies are shortlisted. Sinopec ranks second, ChemChina ranks seventh, Hengli Petrochemical rises significantly by 13 and ranks 14th, and Rongsheng Petrochemical jumps 27. Ranked to 24th.

In terms of national distribution, the United States has 28 companies, ranking first; Japan has 16 companies, ranking second; China has 13 companies, ranking third; Germany has 9 companies, ranking fourth.

Due to the decline in demand caused by the global new crown pneumonia epidemic and economic stagnation, the income of global chemical companies will generally decline in 2020. Among the billion-dollar clubs this year, 78 companies saw revenue decline, and only 22 companies increased revenue. The average annual sales are approximately US$11.8 billion, and the median sales are approximately US$8.25 billion.

In 2020, only BASF and Sinopec have sales revenue exceeding US$50 billion; there are 5 companies with a value of US$30-40 billion, namely Dow Chemical, Formosa Plastics, ExxonMobil, Ineos, and ChemChina. There are 9 companies with 20 to 30 billion U.S. dollars; another 42 companies have sales revenues of more than 10 billion U.S. dollars.

The Chemical Weekly Billion Dollar Club is an annual ranking of the world's top chemical manufacturers that publicly disclose their revenue. Due to differences in data collection, etc., it may not be completely consistent with the billion-dollar club rankings of the previous year. In addition, several companies with large chemical businesses, such as Koch Industries, Total, BP and PetroChina, failed to participate in this year's ranking because they did not fully report their chemical revenues publicly.

The exchange rate for the ranking is based on the exchange rate at the end of each company's respective financial year. For example, the exchange rate for the fiscal year ending December 31, 2020 is 1 U.S. dollar = 0.81 Euro/6.52 yuan (RMB).
