The third quarter of the European tire market was flat

2021-10-26

Recently, the European Tire and Rubber Manufacturers Association (ETRMA) stated that the third quarter of the European tire market did not perform well and did not continue the good momentum of the second quarter, and individual market segments even showed negative growth.

According to ETRMA data, 60.55 million passenger car replacement tires were shipped in the third quarter, slightly higher than last year's 60.46 million, and a decrease of 2% from 61.58 million in 2019. Among them, all-season tire shipments increased by 20% year-on-year to 6.99 million units; summer tires fell 11% year-on-year to 16.63 million units; winter tires remained stable at 23.46 million units. Compared with the passenger car tire market, the truck tire market performed well. In the third quarter of this year, the shipment of replacement truck tires was 3.56 million, an increase of 2% compared with the 3.5 million in 2019. ETRMA said that this benefited from the higher-than-expected economic recovery and more active inventory replenishment. However, due to freight and delivery issues, this figure is still 1% lower than the level in the same period in 2020.

Both agricultural tires and motorcycle tires declined in the third quarter. The shipment volume of replacement agricultural tires fell to 245,000 units, down 16% compared to 2020; the shipment volume of replacement motorcycle tires was 2.18 million units, down 8% year-on-year.

ETRMA Secretary-General Fazilet Cinaralp said: "Similar to 2020, the overall European tire market will decline slightly in 2021, but the all-season tire market will still maintain strong growth, and the recovery of the European tire industry is still unstable. I hope that the next few months will show more Positive trend."
