Tunisia resumes phosphate export

2022-06-02

Recently, the Tunisian government announced the resumption of phosphate exports that have been suspended for more than 10 years. Due to the sharp increase in global demand for fertilizer products, it is expected that the export volume of phosphate in Tunisia this year will exceed 300000 tons.

Tunisia is one of the major phosphate producing and exporting countries in the world, and phosphate is the main raw material for the production of chemical fertilizers. Tunisia's state-owned Gafsa phosphate company has contributed almost all of the country's phosphate production. In recent years, the phosphate mining area of Gafsa in southwest Tunisia has fallen into continuous social unrest. Since 2011, the phosphate production in Tunisia has been declining, and the losses of Gafsa phosphate company have been accumulating. The company's annual average daily output has decreased from 14000 tons to 4500 tons.

In order to boost the economy, the Tunisian government plans to resume the export of phosphate. At the same time, the government emphasizes that the local social environment has improved significantly in recent years. The Tunisian government plans to export more than 300000 tons of phosphate this year, and the export volume will double to about 600000 tons next year.
