India imports coal for the first time in seven years

2022-06-06

On the 28th local time, the Indian energy department said that Coal India will import coal for power generation. This is the first time India has imported coal since 2015.

In April this year, India experienced its worst power outage in six years. India is expected to face a coal shortage in the third quarter given the surge in power demand. Coal inventories at Indian power plants have fallen by about 13% since April, the lowest level in years before the Indian summer. India's energy department said that due to the confusion caused by the coal import tenders reflected by the Indian state governments, they decided to suspend the independent tendering of each state, and the Coal Corporation of India will handle coal import matters on its behalf.

According to the Xinhua News Agency, about 75% of India's electricity comes from coal power generation, and coal used in coal-fired thermal power plants accounts for more than three-quarters of annual coal consumption. Coal stocks in many places in India are running low, and India has been hit by heat waves for days, and the power shortage has intensified.
