Belarus: Interested in attracting Chinese mining investment

Recently, Belarusian Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Hudek and Belarusian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Schenko conducted an internal study on the possibility of cooperation between China and Belarus in the field of environmental protection and sustainable development of natural resources. Minister Hudek showed interest in China's experience in environmental protection and rational utilization of natural resources, and at the same time intends to introduce Chinese-related technologies into Belarus through the diplomatic channel of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary. In addition, they discussed the possibility of attracting Chinese investment into the development of mineral resources in Belarus.

Belarus is one of the countries with the most abundant potash resources and the highest degree of development in the world. According to data released by the Global Mineral Resources Strategic Research Center of China Geological Survey in 2021, Belarusian potash (potassium chloride) reserves are 1.291 billion tons, accounting for 10.03% of the world. According to the US Geological Survey, the global potash mine production (converted to K2O) in 2021 will be about 45.86 million tons, of which Belarus is 8 million tons, accounting for 17% of global production. According to the United Nations trade statistics, in 2021, China will import 1.75 million tons of potash fertilizer (potassium chloride) from Belarus, accounting for about 23% of my country's total imports. It is an important source of potash fertilizer imports in China.
