Customs data show that China's demand for pulpwood is still increasing

2023-03-13

According to customs statistics, about four fifths of the global wood chip trade is hardwood chips every year, which are mainly shipped to the Asian market. Customs data show that in the past 10 years, with the expansion of China's pulp production capacity and the lack of domestic wood fiber, China can be said to be the main force driving the global wood chip trade.

According to customs data, in 2022, due to the impact of high global inflation and the closure of the domestic epidemic, the orders of China's timber industry were forced to significantly reduce, and the market environment was not optimistic. However, according to the recent report, the hardwood chips imported by China in 2022 increased by 18.8% (2.78 million tons) year on year. Vietnam is still the main source of Chinese wood chip import.

According to customs data, the import of wood chips in 2022

Vietnam: The amount of wood chips from Vietnam increased by 18.5% year-on-year to 10.532 million tons.

Australia: The amount of wood chips from Australia increased by 25.8% year-on-year to 3.175 million tons.

Thailand: Although the amount of wood chips from Thailand is less than that of Vietnam, it has nearly doubled year on year.

Chile: The amount of wood chips from Chile has decreased.

2023 market forecast

In 2023, under the new epidemic prevention and control policy, the situation of the Chinese market will improve, and with the development of the pulp industry, China's demand for wood chips will not decrease.

In the three years since the outbreak of the epidemic, the number of wood chips exported from Vietnam to China has been steadily increasing, so Vietnam is expected to remain the main market for Chinese wood chip imports in 2023.

According to customs data, in February this year, nearly 2.7 million hectares of forest land in Chile were burned, and many local wood processing plants were forced to shut down. It is expected that Chile's wood chips exported to China this year will continue to decrease, and Brazil's eucalyptus chips may replace Chile's market share.
