Rare in history, U.S. toilet paper prices soared by 15.6%

2021-05-11

According to a report by CNN, the manufacturing cost of toilet paper has increased due to the increase in wood pulp prices. In the past year, the price of toilet paper in the United States has risen by 15.6%. Pulp industry analysts said that pulp prices have risen from US$606 per ton in September last year to US$907 per ton in April this year. Never before in the history of the industry has seen such a substantial increase.

It is understood that about 70% of the pulp used by American tissue manufacturers is imported from Brazil, and about 30% are imported from Canada. According to the report, the increase in pulp prices is the latest example of the US economy facing a shortage of raw materials. Prior to this, there was a shortage of wood, steel, and chips in the United States. The shortage of a variety of raw materials for production has caused market participants to warn about the outlook for inflation in the US.

Some analysts said that the US inflation rate may rise sharply, and by the middle of next year, the inflation rate may rise to 3% to 4%. The US inflation rate in March this year was 2.6%.
