The Bolivian government recently issued Supreme Decree No. 4514, reducing the import tariff rate of educational books from 20% to zero to encourage people to read. In addition, in order to encourage and protect national industrial production, the Bolivian government has also raised the import tariff rate of ceramic tiles and glassware by 15 to 20 percentage points.

The Bolivian Opinion reported that Néstor Huanca, Minister of Production Development and Diversified Economy of Bolivia, said in an interview with the media on June 5: “We have reduced the import tariff rate for educational books from 20%. Adjusted to zero to encourage children and young people to develop good reading habits. The categories of educational books that are exempt from import tariffs this time mainly include: map books, educational books, educational manuals, educational magazines, picture books, and children’s picture books."

Vanka also stated that the Paraguayan government issued Supreme Decree No. 4514, which also raised the import tariff rate of ceramic tiles and glassware by 15 to 20 percentage points, aiming to protect and encourage national industrial production through import substitution policies.

Vanka said that Bolivia's ceramic tile imports in 2019 and 2020 were 31 million U.S. dollars and 22.4 million U.S. dollars, respectively. China, India and Brazil are the main sources of imports. In 2020, the import volume of glassware will exceed 5 million U.S. dollars; the government; The measures to increase the import tariff rate of ceramic tiles and glassware will promote the development of national industry. The production capacity of domestic ceramic tiles and glassware enterprises can fully meet the needs of the domestic market.

In addition, Vanka also called on the people of Bolivia to actively consume domestic products, which will help promote the revitalization of the national economy and production.
