In the past few years, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has taken a step-by-step approach to solve the problem of plastic use in packaging.

For example, in the outer packaging of PlayStation 4 related products such as the DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller, about 70% of the recyclable PET plastic is used in the North American, South American and European markets as display windows and hooks/handles. Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) designed the materials used in the PS5 console and accessory packaging to be completely recyclable. Calculated by weight, 93-99% of each PS5 package is plastic-free overall, depending on different products. We know that there is still a lot of work to be done, but we have also implemented many improvements to achieve this goal:

Design fully recyclable packaging

Avoid using styrofoam or plastic trays by using card inserts and pulp buffer trays

Use paper ties instead of plastic ties

Eliminate plastic protective bags for cables and instruction manuals where feasible

Cancel the plastic display window of the PS5 accessory package and replace it with a closed card box

Use foldable rather than glued hooks/handles on the outer packaging

In addition, in 2021, we will test the use of polypropylene recycled from post-industrial waste in our physical game packaging boxes in Europe.

To solve plastic pollution, the primary problem is to define the recyclability design of plastics and establish a standard system. This is also an important step for China and the world to work together to solve the problem of plastic pollution.

Recyclability design is the technical basis for solving plastic pollution, including a complete set of systems including the compilation of recyclability design guidelines, the establishment of laboratories, the issuance of certification procedures, and the establishment of identification systems.
