Recently, packaging supplier Novolex announced the launch of a new production line in Tennessee, USA, to produce compostable cold drink cups made of polylactic acid (PLA).
PLA transparent cups will be provided by Novolex brand Eco-Products, a leading catering packaging supplier, focusing on the production of catering packaging from renewable and recycled resources.
Novolex Chief Technology Officer Adrianne Tipton said: "PLA looks, behaves, and performs similarly to traditional transparent plastics, but it is 100% compostable in commercial composting facilities. "This is a more sustainable way we provide our customers. select.
“At Novolex, we are focused on the future of recyclable or compostable packaging that we make,” Tipton adds.
The new production line is located at the Novolex manufacturing complex in Chattanooga and uses the most advanced technologies from some of the world's leading suppliers of thermoforming and extrusion equipment.
The environmental benefits of PLA products are twofold. First, they are made from renewable resources such as corn and can be grown again and again. Secondly, PLA products are compostable products certified by a third-party BPI, which means that the products can be turned into fertile soil instead of going to a landfill.
"We are making cups made of plants, which can be composted after use to help plants grow again," said Ian Jacobson, President of Eco-Products. "This is part of our commitment to work with our customers to achieve the goal of zero waste. This is a win-win for our customers and the environment."
