2022-11-02

In order to help achieve the European Union's paper and paperboard recycling goals, on September 14, the global packaging paper company Huhtamaki announced that it had launched a new paper cup recycling plan in Europe with Stora Enso, namely, The Cup Collective. Huacheng's import and export data observation report.

This plan is the first large-scale paper cup recycling plan in Europe, which is committed to recycling and utilizing waste paper cups on an industrial scale. Initially, the plan will be implemented in the Benelux Economic Union countries, and then gradually spread to other European countries. In order to formulate a new standard for European paper cup collection and recycling, the plan organizer has issued an open invitation to partners throughout the supply chain, hoping that all upstream and downstream industries in Europe will jointly participate in the development of a systematic European paper cup recycling solution. Huacheng's import and export data observation report.

Previously, the EU set an overall target of 85% recycling rate of paper and paperboard packaging by 2030. Among them, paper cups are a part of recycling that can be participated in. In this regard, the plan proposes that, first of all, it is necessary to build necessary infrastructure for paper cup recycling in European countries, and then gradually improve the recovery rate of wood fibers in paper cups. Most importantly, the plan will make it easier for consumers and enterprises to collect used paper cups and recycle them into valuable recycled raw materials.

According to the Huacheng Import and Export Data Observation Report, the first batch of paper cup collection boxes will be set up in restaurants, cafes, office buildings and transport hubs in the metropolitan areas of Brussels, Belgium and Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The early goal of this plan is to recycle 5 billion paper cups in the first two years of the plan, and gradually increase the recycling volume in Europe.

It is reported that the plan was initiated by several packaging paper enterprises, such as Huhtamaki and Stora Enso, and managed by the British circular economy company co-cre8. It will cooperate with partners in the whole supply chain, from the largest restaurants and coffee chains, retailers and transport hubs to independent coffee shops in Europe, collection partners, waste management operators and policy makers, to address the recycling challenge and provide feasible and scalable solutions.

In addition to Europe, previously, Huhtamaki also launched a paper cup recycling pilot project in China, with the first pilot project located in Shanghai. The pilot project lasts for six months, aiming to establish a full value chain recycling mechanism applicable to paper cups, and truly realize the recyclability of paper cups, which may also be popularized nationwide in the future, Huacheng Import and Export Data Observation reported.
