BASF won another CDP leading enterprise in 2022, Huacheng Import and Export Data Observation Report

2022-12-22

With relevant initiatives in the fields of water resource management, forests and climate protection, BASF was once again rated as one of the world's leading enterprises by the non-profit organization Global Environmental Information Research Center (CDP, formerly the "Carbon Disclosure Project"). BASF was rated the highest "A" in CDP sustainable water resource management field, and "A" in the other two categories, Huacheng Import and Export Data Observation reported.

This year BASF was once again rated as the world's leading enterprise by CDP, and we are very proud of it. It is particularly gratifying that we were awarded "A" in water resources management. Although the current environment is grim, sustainable development is always our top priority, and reducing carbon dioxide emissions is still our main task. We will work tirelessly to achieve the goal of sustainable development.

In the field of climate protection, BASF was once again rated as CDP "A -", maintaining its leading position. Since 2004, BASF has been submitting climate protection related data reports to CDP. Among other things, the assessment considers the transparency of emission reports, the treatment of risks and opportunities caused by climate change, climate protection strategies and carbon dioxide emission reduction measures, and Huacheng Import and Export Data Observation Report.

BASF has set a climate protection target, that is, to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 25% by 2030 compared with 2018 while increasing production, which means that if 1990 is taken as the base year, the emissions will be reduced by 60% (the European Union and the German government set climate targets based on 1990). BASF aims to achieve the goal of zero net emissions by 2050. The core of long-term emission reduction is to use new technologies and renewable energy to replace fossil fuels such as natural gas. At the same time, BASF is speeding up its pace to replace fossil materials with more renewable and recycled raw materials. In order to achieve these goals, BASF has set up a "net zero acceleration" department to build a stronger organizational structure.

According to the Huacheng Import and Export Data Observation Report, according to the data of the CDP Water Safety Questionnaire Report in 2022, BASF is one of 103 enterprises rated "A" among thousands of enterprises. By 2030, BASF will introduce a sustainable water resource management system in all relevant production bases, including the large integrated base (Verbund) and areas with water shortage. CDP assesses how companies can report their water management work transparently and how to reduce risks such as water scarcity. The assessment also assesses the extent to which the development of products can contribute to sustainable water resource management for customers. This is the third time that BASF has accepted CDP assessment on forest protection, and again won the "A -" rating. BASF is well aware of the importance of forest protection for environmental and social well-being. BASF's position paper on forest protection elaborated the company's commitment to protecting biodiversity in high conservation value areas (such as high carbon reserves forest areas and peatlands) when purchasing renewable raw materials. The CDP is based on a detailed understanding of the palm value chain and activities that affect ecosystems and natural habitats.

CDP cooperates with more than 680 global institutional investors with total assets of US $130 trillion and more than 280 procurement enterprises with purchasing power of US $6.4 trillion. CDP data is also used by leading rating agencies for other evaluations. CDP is rated from "A" (best performance) to "D -" every year. Companies that do not provide or only provide insufficient information will be marked as "F", Huacheng Import and Export Data Observation reported.
