Import and export data shows that in the first quarter of this year, the import volume and import amount (in US dollars) of EU clothing decreased by 15.2% and 10.9% year-on-year, respectively. The decrease in knitted clothing imports was greater than that of woven clothing. In the same period last year, the import volume and import amount of EU clothing increased by 18% and 23% respectively year-on-year.

According to the import and export data, in the first quarter of this year, the number of clothes imported by the EU from China and Türkiye decreased by 22.5% and 23.6% respectively year on year, and the import amount decreased by 17.8% and 12.8% respectively. The import volume from Bangladesh and India decreased by 3.7% and 3.4% year-on-year, respectively, and the import amount increased by 3.8% and 5.6%.

According to the import and export data, in terms of quantity, Bangladesh has been the largest source of EU clothing imports in the past few years, accounting for 31.5% of EU clothing imports, more than 22.8% of China and 9.3% of Türkiye.

In terms of amount, Bangladesh accounted for 23.45% of EU clothing imports in the first quarter of this year, very close to China's 23.9%. Moreover, according to import and export data, Bangladesh ranks first in both quantity and amount of knitted clothing.

Compared to before the epidemic, the EU's clothing imports to Bangladesh increased by 6% in the first quarter, while imports to China decreased by 28%. In addition, according to import and export data, the unit price increase of Chinese competitors' clothing in the first quarter of this year also exceeded that of China, reflecting that the demand for EU clothing imports is shifting towards expensive products.
